On the brink

For years now we have been seeing those bumperstickers that read "1.20.09 Bush's Last Day" and now that day has come. Let's all say "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh".  Like him (Bush) or not, i think one thing we can all agree on is that it is time for a substantial change.  A change in Washington, a change in economic leadership and absolutely a change in the way we conduct ourselves in the world today.  We need fresh ideas, eyes and ears to make way for a new Earth.  But lets not put all of the responsibility on our new President's shoulders.  It is all of our responsibility to change the way we walk on this planet.  We cannot expect someone else to do all the work.  Tomorrow the heavens will not part with a heavenly choir ushering in a new age.  However, maybe our path will be a bit more illuminated and we will feel somewhat lighter in our step.  Lets all be hopeful but lets us all now get to work.

Happy, Hopeful New Year!!!!

Ahhhh, the holiday season is coming to a close.  All of the fretting, worrying and pondering is now behind us.  Now that all the gifts have been given and received we turn our collective attention to the hope that is the New Year.  Now is the time to consider how grateful we are for all of the joys of our lives.  How fortunate we are for living amongst such beauty and how much we are nourished by the community in which we live.   Let us all pause, reflect and rejoice in all that a new year brings.

Shop Local

Here we are in the thick of it, as they say. Holiday shopping enters the final two weeks and the competition is on for the coveted holiday shopper. These are trying times for all of us and we need to stick together to help one another through.  Certainly  we all have those times when we just need a Costco or BJ's or even Walmart for that year's supply of toilet paper or Purel.  But what if we all just took a stroll down Main Street in Vineyard Haven or Circuit Ave in Oak Bluffs, to the shops here on the island of Martha's Vineyard.  Come in to visit those of us who are staying open this winter in the midst of a recession.  You can find a great variety of gift ideas and we are all having great sales!!!!  Just think, by shopping on island you just may help to save jobs in our community.   Shop local and support our island economy; no boat ride necessary.

Cashmere, Merino, Angora

This time of year we get a lot of questions about the many types of "wool" that we sell, specifically: cashmere, merino and angora.  First and foremost they are from three different animals.  Cashmere is from the cashmere goat and is notable because of it's softness and warmth. Merino wool, originally from the Spanish merino sheep, is notable for it's warm fleece and it's ability to wick away moisture from the wearer.  Angora is actually from the angora rabbit (not to be confused with Mohair which is from the angora goat) and is notable for it's fluffiness and warmth and is often blended with wool to give it elasticity.  So if you are considering one of these great wools as a gift, lets say in a sweater it would be good to consider the nature of the recipient. If they are active and outdoorsy, try merino; if they are sensible and chic, try cashmere and finally if they are comfy, cozy type who love to be pampered, go with the angora.

Warm, comfy and cozy

Now that the season has begun to settle in, we begin to  spend more time inside and feel a need to make our homes warm and cozy.  Come in to check out our rugs from Woodard Weave, Elizabeth Eakins or Michaelian Home. We have a good variety of  bedlinens from Sferra, Judi Boisson, Traditions and Anne de Solene.  Who can resist a chenille throw from Textillery or a wool throw from Mackintosh to complement a good book on a cold afternoon.   Come in, we can help make the season truly a joy.
